Why does your boat need navigation light? When it comes to boat navigation lights, it is the responsibility of every owner to make sure their boat complies. If your boat is out in the water between dusk and dawn, you need lights. Even during low light conditions during the day, you may need lights.

Whether you're anchored or on the go, having the right lights on board helps keep you, your passengers, and other water users safe. Why is boat navigation important? If you come across a boat and see a green, red and white light, you approach another motorized boat head-on. In this situation, none of the vessels have the right of way.

Both operators must take early and substantial steps to stay away from the other vessel. Both operators must slow down and head to starboard. Navigation lights tell other skippers what your boat, anchored, motorized or under sail is doing, so they can predict your movement and anticipate the potential danger of a collision.
